Speaking Confidence: From Anxious to Awesome.
Week One: Embrace Your Nerves to Find Genius Confidence.
If You Imagine Public Speaking Do You Feel: Ready to Run and Hide Under a Blanket? Shaky? Sweaty? Blank? Or Otherwise Terrified? |
Would You Rather Face Down Lord Voldemort than Make a Simple Speech?????
If you can answer YES!!! to any of the above then congratulations- you're a member of the human race!
Almost everyone feels fear even imagining speaking in front of others.
So first off, you're not alone. You're normal. And there is nothing wrong with you at all. In fact whatever struggles or blocks you're experiencing are actually gifts. I'll explain that in a moment.
But you want to feel really confident, free and able to say what matters most and say it in a way where others really hear you. Whether it's for work, maybe around gorgeous members of whatever sex you're into, maybe on stage as a teacher, a coach, a performing artist.
And you do have gifts to share. Everyone does. When we don't embrace and express our gifts life feels shit! We're anxious, we don't thrive at work, in relationships, at anything. No area of our life can reach it's full zesty potential if we are not expressing ourselves fully in it.
You (hopefully) want to feel great, say great stuff, and have great positive impact, great relationships and generally relish in the zest of each day's opportunities for connection, expression and magic. This is something we can all do, no matter what career, role, past, current skills and underwear we possess.
If you do want to experience the confidence to express yourself fully in all those areas, start right here. Start by beginning to accept that you, exactly as you are, are naturally a gifted speaker, naturally full of important things to share.
Not the 'perfect' you that adverts sell you. Not the you who's fixed all your 'flaws.' Just you as you are. The Flawsome you!
Once we accept ourselves as we actually are, we can easily speak with enormous authenticity, passion and power. And people will identify with us, and believe in us. Because they're just like you- naturally gifted, and full of meaning, but not advert perfect and glossy. When we embrace our messy magnificent selves as a gift, we help our audiences do that too. No matter what our subject, we can create incredible relationships and impacts on audiences- just through the way we make them feel.
Where does full self acceptance as a speakers start? Accepting our nerves, accepting the shakes, the tingles, the jitters. All of this is actually a gift.
Nervous energy is just energy. It's our body's chemical magic factory kicking in and giving us all the juice we need to be at our very most alive, alert and zinging. These chemicals course through our bodies and brains and make everything work in the most powerful way possible- if you can embrace the nerves and be grateful for them. If you can learn to harness these incredible chemicals and allow them to fill you, instead of freaking you out.
Most people either shut them down- and then become a bit blank, a bit disconnected. Or they fail to shut them down- and end up shaking, jittery, and having brain-blanks and so on.
When we embrace our nervous energy a little miracle happens- we feel inspired and excited instead of anxious. Over time, if you practice working with these genius helpers, you start to automatically feel great whenever you have to speak in front of others.
You basically start to love every minute of it. I've gone from being one of those shaky, freaked out people who felt out of control onstage, and insecure afterwards, to feeling always an enormous positive energy moving through me as I prep, as I speak, and after. I love every moment of it, and feel profound fulfilment from it.
And I've worked with over a thousand people, of every walk of life, and seen them all experience that too.
How do you transform nervous energy into inspiration, anxiety into awesomeness? Just follow the guided audio below every day for a week. Practice with a focus on pleasure rather than pressure. Don't stress yourself, don't judge your experience. Just go with it.
And throughout each day, just notice whenever you feel nervous, take a moment, breathe deep and smile and welcome the gift of excitement and inspiration wanting to come out in you.
Imagine your brain re-wiring itself, and feel it happen. Start to feel blessed that you have these chemical kick-starters. It's more vulnerable, being alive like this, but it leads to infinitely more confidence, connection and power in every moment.
One week of practice may not transform a lifetime of bad habits, but it will give you an experience of your true natural confidence, and from there you can keep growing it forever.
Go for it! And please share your experiences with me and everyone else on the challenge in the Facebook Group. In the group we can share questions, breakthrough, and stories together. I'm there for any questions or ideas you have.
